Message from Edgemont’ new social worker, Michael Blakey!

Hello!

I am the new school social worker at Edgemont Elementary. I am reaching out to all parents to inform you about Hope Squad and the Kindness Club. I am new to school social work, but have been a social worker for 18 years. I am learning about Kindness Club and Hope Squad and doing my best to run them as they are intended based on recent trainings I have attended.

Kindness Club

The Kindness Club will be open to any student that would like to participate. The student will need to fill out the application (attached) and I will need a parent/guardian to sign a permission form (attached). Both of these can be turned in at the front office. There will also be copies that can be picked up at the front office to be filled out and returned. The Kindness Club will be open to all applicants and will be held on Thursday mornings from 8-8:30. It  will be run by my intern, Emma Sawyer. Depending on how many students want to participate, the groups will meet 1-2 times each month. The club will involve activities as well as lessons about caring for others, being inclusive, appreciating other’s differences, how to be a good friend, recognizing bullying, being an upstander, good sportsmanship, and being a friend. We need to split the groups up by age and keep them to about 20 students per group. Once we have all the applications we will inform parents/guardians of how many times and which Thursday each month their student will attend. We would like to have all applications in by September 24 so we can get organized and start the Kindness Club in October. We plan on having the club go through the whole school year.

Hope Squad

The Hope Squad will be just for 6th graders this year. Students for the Hope Squad will be selected by recommendation from teachers and administration. It will be limited to 8-10 students and we will meet during lunch once a week. Once students have been identified I will reach out to those parents to schedule a parent meeting. I am hoping to do this by the middle of September. Hope Squad has a new curriculum this year and as I am learning I would like to keep the group small. Next year I will be looking at expanding into the 4th and 5th grades.

Soy el nuevo trabajador social de la escuela Edgemont. Me dirijo a todos los padres para informarles sobre el Hope Squad y el Kindness Club. Soy nuevo en el trabajo social escolar, pero he sido trabajador social por 18 años. Estoy aprendiendo sobre el Club de la Bondad y el Escuadrón de la Esperanza y haciendo lo mejor que pueda para llevarlos a cabo tal y como se pretende, basándome en los recientes entrenamientos a los que he asistido.

Club de la Bondad

El Club de la Bondad estará abierto a cualquier estudiante que quiera participar. El estudiante tendrá que llenar la solicitud (adjunta) y necesitaré que un padre/tutor firme un formulario de permiso (adjunto). Ambos pueden ser entregados en la oficina principal. También habrá copias que pueden ser recogidas en la oficina principal para ser llenadas y devueltas. El Club de la Bondad estará abierto a todos los solicitantes y se celebrará los jueves por la mañana de 8 a 8:30. Será dirigido por mi interna, Emma Sawyer. Dependiendo del número de estudiantes que quieran participar, los grupos se reunirán 1-2 veces al mes. El club incluirá actividades, así como lecciones sobre el cuidado de los demás, la inclusión, la apreciación de las diferencias de los demás, cómo ser un buen amigo, el reconocimiento de la intimidación, ser un upstander, el buen espíritu deportivo, y ser un amigo. Tenemos que dividir los grupos por edades y mantenerlos en unos 20 alumnos por grupo. Una vez que tengamos todas las solicitudes, informaremos a los padres/tutores de cuántas veces y qué jueves de cada mes asistirá su estudiante. Nos gustaría tener todas las solicitudes antes del 24 de septiembre para poder organizarnos y empezar el Club de la Bondad en octubre. Planeamos tener el club durante todo el año escolar.

Escuadrón de la Esperanza

El Escuadrón de la Esperanza será sólo para los estudiantes de 6º grado este año. Los estudiantes para el Hope Squad serán seleccionados por recomendación de los maestros y la administración. Estará limitado a 8-10 estudiantes y nos reuniremos durante el almuerzo una vez a la semana. Una vez que los estudiantes han sido identificados me pondré en contacto con los padres para programar una reunión de padres. Espero hacer esto a mediados de septiembre. Hope Squad tiene un nuevo plan de estudios este año y como estoy aprendiendo me gustaría mantener el grupo pequeño. El año que viene voy a ver la posibilidad de ampliar en el 4 º y 5 º grado.
