EDGEMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

September 2020

Dear Edgemont Families,

Thank you for such a wonderful start to our school year!  The love and support we have felt from our community has been encouraging and uplifting.  We appreciate all you have done to help your children adjust back to school and be ready to learn.  Your children have done wonderful with wearing masks, practicing good hygiene, and following our new safety guidelines.  I keep hearing them say how happy they are to be back at school again. Thank you for raising and parenting such resilient children!

Even though we are on an A/B schedule at this time we remain committed to high academic standards at Edgemont.  Our teachers are currently in the process of assessing their students in Reading and Math. To maintain testing fidelity, these assessments will need to be completed in a school environment and not at home. If your child is doing homestudy, their teacher will be contacting you to set up an appointment for your child to come into the school to complete the required assessments. The appointments will take place in the afternoons after school is out on Monday-Thursday or on Fridays.  Thank you for helping us get all of our children assessed.  This data helps us know exactly how to meet your child’s needs in academics with interventions and enrichment activities.

Parent support is vital to student achievement in school.  To help support your child this year in school be sure to set up your Canvas Parent Observer account. If you haven’t set up your Canvas observer account yet, I strongly encourage you to do so.  This allows you to keep track of your child’s assignments in Canvas and support them during the online learning portion of their week.  I’ve included the directions below for you to do this.

Instructions for Creating a Parent Observer Account

Go to: https://provo.instructure.com/login/canvas

Create an account by following this how-to article: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Observer-Guide/How-do-I-sign-up-for-a-Canvas-account-as-a-parent/ta-p/540  dd

Before you can finish your account, you will need to pair your student’s account with yours. This article will help you generate the pairing code: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Student-Guide/How-do-I-generate-a-pairing-code-for-an-observer-as-a-student/ta-p/418

If you have more than one student, you will need to pair the remaining students as well. This how-to article will help you complete that: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Observer-Guide/How-do-I-link-a-student-to-my-user-account-as-an-observer/ta-p/539

Our PTA will be holding their first PTA meeting of the year this Wednesday.  The meeting will be virtual this month. Please see the information below to join the meeting.

Thank you again for your support and encouragement of our Edgemont faculty, staff, and students this school year.  We couldn’t do what we do without you!  Together we can help make this a wonderful year for our Edgemont children.

Sincerely,

Harmony Kartchner, Principal

Edgemont PTA News

Welcome back to school! We hope everyone’s first week has been a good one! We have four quick items on our upcoming schedule:

1) FIRST PTA MEETING SEPT 2ND.  Our first meeting is next Wednesday at 9 am.  We’re diving into virtual territory here and are going to use Google Meet.  All you need is a Google account and you can access via the Google Meet app or your regular web browser at https://meet.google.com/.  Here’s the link to join: https://meet.google.com/puw-pkpq-ogj

2)  BIKE WEEK is September 8-11.  Have your kids ride their bikes to school and around their neighborhoods!  It’s fun and great exercise for the whole family.  Also, if your kids want to learn how to work on their bikes, the Provo Bicycle Collective hosts “Youth Open Shop” hours where kids 8+ can learn to work on their own bike or earn a free bike by working on shop bikes.  Let’s get out and ride!

3) PTA SIGN-UPS.  We normally do sign-ups at Back to School Night but since that didn’t happen in person, please take a moment and sign up online for those items you’d like to help with because, let’s face it, we couldn’t do anything without help!  Here’s a Sign-up Genius with all the different categories:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090F49AEA82DA6FB6-ptavolunteers

4) VIRTUAL FUND RUN.  That’s right, this year our Fund Run will be virtual.  It will take place at the end of September and be FUN for EVERYONE.  Watch for details coming your way soon.

Please follow our Instagram (@edgemontpta) and Facebook (Edgemont Elementary PTA) for information on how to join PTA, support us through AmazonSmile (FREE to you but $$$ for us when you order on Amazon), and stay connected with happenings at Edgemont.   Here’s to a fantastic year!  -Dani Hoagland & Malia Vaughn
